Your Carbon Footprint, How Low Can You Go?

Not everybody that wants to improve our planet’s situation can do all they would like to. Some, stick with recycling. Some, organize rallies on the streets of City Hall. Dorks like yours truly, post on a website. Nobody can do it all, but there is the necessity to do something.

The first place I recommend is the home. Here, recycling, and energy conservation is easy and cheap. On the more pricy side, you can actually profit from green activities, such as feeding power back into the power grid. So how low can you go? For those of us that are already doing our part, we are at least making an impact but is it at least possible that you could go lower? Maybe. As more eco-friendly consumer products are made available, there may be a few “tweaks” you can perform to further reduce your carbon footprint. Just make sure to stay on top of the eco-friendly features of anything new you buy, as the number of those types of consumer products will increase. For the most part, if you are actively eco-friendly, you are doing something. If you are not eco-friendly, why not? It’s easy, it can be done at home, it saves money, I just can’t see the problem here.

The next place I recommend is your mode of transportation. Not everybody can just up and buy the best eco-friendly vehicle. Also, it’s not so definitive that motorcycles are a better answer than cars or even SUVs when it comes to pollution. There are a few free things you can do to improve your current vehicle, but ultimately, the best results would come from an eco-friendly vehicle. It’s the motor and fuel involved with a vehicle that make it green or not, not the air in it’s tires. It’s an investment that has a powerful impact. If major industry could be sold (and yes I mean a satisfied bottom line) a much better outcome would result from green industrial vehicles, the cargo ships, the monster jets, and cargo trucks. That may still be a while away from now, but we should never take our eyes off the goal as earth-conscious individuals and as to how low we can really go. This is just the best result should our transportation change motors and/or fuels.

It may be apparent that our carbon footprint can be lowered by a massive amount in time and that there is no quick-fix option here. Sure there are things you can do here and there to reduce your overall carbon footprint in an already toxic environment, but there are things we can do here and there to reduce the overall toxic environment. Those things require earth-consciousness, focus and balance. Earth-consciousness because, how can you clean up a toxic environment if you’re unaware of it? Focus, and learn the ins and outs of your interactions with the planet and focus on ways to get the most out of those interactions. Balance: Never forget that earth consciousness is a value to be held within our value system, fanaticism is discouraged.

So, we can lower our carbon footprint, but what about reversing it? For the most part, all we can do is plant as many trees as possible or donate to an organization that participates in reversing our carbon footprint in such a manner, some organizations prefer the wheat field. At the rate we’re cutting down trees and shooting pollutants sky high, we’re going to need a better option.

As I’ve stated before, I’m inclined to believe that technology would have the greater involvement in cleaning up our environment since it’s the most involved in destroying it. I understand that most of my readers are not mad scientist with an evil plot to save the world, this is why I promote earth-consciousness. With enough earth-conscious people, toxic air will become more of the elephant in the room it already is and more people (think mad scientist) will address it.

Will a massive technological change happen soon? No. Why? Technology is a consumer product. Industry would need a cheaper and just as/more efficient way to produce such green products. It has to be tested and safe, easy to use, convenient and so forth. There would also need to be a lot more variety in technology/consumer products that reverse our carbon footprint. These hurdles are not small ones to overcome, nor are they impossible to make history.

So how low can you go? How low can we all go? For now, if we were in a limbo for our lives we would definitely lose. The good thing is we still have some time before the game is called win or lose.
